Guilt focuses on an action: “I did something bad.” Shame attacks identity: “I am bad.” It makes us shrink rather than repair.

The inner spotlight

Even without actual judgement, it can feel as if everyone sees the flaw. The body contracts, the face burns and words disappear.

Shame feeds on secrecy and isolation. Safe disclosure and an honest but compassionate response reduce its power.
